When Ruby Miller’s boss announces he’s sending her on an extended business trip to New York City, she’s shocked. As one of the best and brightest young engineers in London, she knows she’s professionally up to the task. The part that’s throwing her is where she’ll be spending a month up close and personal working alongside—and staying in a hotel with—Niall Stella, her firm’s top urban planning executive and The Hottest Man Alive. Despite her ongoing crush, Ruby is certain Niall barely knows she’s alive…until their flirty overnight flight makes him sit up and take notice.
Not one for letting loose and breaking rules, recently divorced Niall would describe himself as hopeless when it comes to women. But even he knows outgoing California-girl Ruby is a breath of fresh air. Once she makes it her mission to help the sexy Brit loosen his tie, there’s no turning back. Thousands of miles from London, it’s easy for the lovers to play pretend. But when the trip is over, will the relationship they’ve built up fall down?
As I’ve mentioned before, I usually don’t like new characters being introduced into series where there are other characters that I know and love and having a whole novel of the series dedicated to these new characters. But with Beautiful Bastard’s case, I really love the way these authors introduce us to new people and I love the connection they have with the other characters. In this case, Beautiful Secret follows Max’s brother Niall as he tries to navigate his life post-divorce and who should take his interest but the cute intern who also has had a crush on him for months? I have to admit that at first I didn’t think that Niall was related to Max at all, because Niall is very reserved where Max is very vocal, and Max is very…uh, lusty…where Niall is very closeted. It was actually quite fun to watch Niall come undone thanks to Ruby.
I also liked the character of Ruby. She reminded me a little of Chloe with her wanton ways, but a little bit like Sarah where she’s reserved and like Hanna because of her studious ways. These two together was bloody brilliant. I especially liked that they didn’t sleep together right away when they realized that they had a mutual attraction. The teasing was amazing and such a change from the way these books usually go. It was wonderful. However, what was less wonderful was the character of Tony and the way that Ruby and Niall had their ‘separation.’ First off, guys like Tony should not get a final say in who gets hired and in policy making. Second off, what is with novels like these and miscommunication? Especially in relationship that didn’t look like it was going to have that problem? I mean, I get it. Things need to happen to push the plot forward, but c’mon.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. A new favorite couple added to the mix. I can’t wait to see what happens to them next and also what about Sarah and Max? Niall said that there’s another baby on the way for them? And what about Chloe and Bennett? Now that they’re past the honeymoon stage what’s going on with them? And Will and Hanna? I’m very curious to know.
