The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those don’t. As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?

I’m kind of glad that I didn’t get around to this book last year. After the way A Court of Mist and Fury left me struggling to pick up the pieces of my broken heart, this book would have just killed me. Don’t get me wrong, this book was good. A little too good, to be honest. Not only did you have major character development for the least expected characters – yes, I’m looking at your Lorcan and Manon – but the alliances that showed up near the end were just flabbergasting to see. I am one hundred percent with Rowan when he told Aelin that sometimes he wished that he could be in that mind of hers to see all the different ways she comes up with her plots. I would not want to play this girl in chess.

As for that ending…I’ll be completely honest that ending is what broke me even though I knew something was coming. After everything that I’ve seen on the Internet about this book, I knew something heartbreaking was going to happen at the end, but THAT I wasn’t expecting. Also, I’m actually a little bit miffed about the final sentence. It was a complete echo of the last sentence in ACOMAF. Secret weddings were running abound in Maas’s works last year, weren’t they?

Final Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. How sad is it that I’m nine books into my reading goal for the year and this is the first one that gets this rating? This book was impressive. The way that the story lines with the different characters converged into one was fantastic. And I also liked how strong a character Elide has become. She’s come a long way since Queen of Shadows.

Bookshelf worthy? Slowly buying them all for my Kindle. I just need books 3 and 4.
