Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers. Those same appetites also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies, including Devlin. He was created as an assassin and is brother to the faeries’ coolly logical High Queen and to her chaotic twin, the embodiment of War. Devlin wants to keep Ani safe from his sisters, knowing that if he fails, he will be the instrument of Ani’s death.
Ani isn’t one to be guarded while others fight battles for her, though. She has the courage to protect herself and the ability to alter Devlin’s plans—and his life. The two are drawn together, each with reason to fear the other and to fear for one another. But as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?
Originally when I read this book back in 2013, I gave this book four stars out of five. I don’t really remember why. Book 4 of the Wicked Lovely series is like book 2; it follows a different set of characters than Ash and Keenan, even though the Summer Monarchs are mentioned in passing thanks to Seth’s involvement in the story line. Which isn’t much, if you really think about it. This story focuses on Gabriel’s daughter Ani and Sorcha’s brother/son/dirty work person Devlin. I want to say that this book was interesting, but it really wasn’t. It just added another layer of the world of Faerie that I’m confused about. And Ani and Devlin’s relationship was just…blah.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5 stars. Reading slump, so everything I say should really be taken with a grain of salt. Blame the holidays or reading way too much this year, who knows? However, I am curious about two things that were mentioned. One, how long has Keenan been missing from the Summer Court? Who took him? And what is Ash doing to get him back? And as for Seth and Ash? What’s going on there? I guess I finally have to get to book 5 to find out.
