When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she’s determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother’s gorgeous best friend, Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy?
Will takes risks for a living, but he’s skeptical about this challenge of Hanna’s…until the wild night his innocently seductive pupil tempts him into bed- and teaches him a thing or two about being with a woman he can’t forget. Now that Hanna’s discovered the power of her own sex appeal, it’s up to Will to prove he’s the only man she’ll ever need.
So after the disappointment that was Beautiful Bombshell, I was somewhat excited to read the next book in the Beautiful Bastard series. For some reason, the ‘major’ books in this series have yet to let me down. And it looked that way when I began Beautiful Player. This was my kryptonite – a girl and guy who start their relationship as really good friends, before realizing that there might be something more between them. And the sexual tension that builds up before they actually do something about it, is delicious and steamy and makes reading the next page all the more fun. However, that being said, I noticed that this book did what book 2 did, once the couple caves in to their desires, a good chunk of the chapters then deal with them having sex in as many positions and places as possible. The story is pretty much forgotten until they throw in the misunderstanding that forces the girl and guy apart for a bit. Look, I’m all for a good steamy sex scene now and again, but don’t forget about the story amongst all that sex. There always has to be a good balance between the two and with Hanna and Will there could have been considering that they were just ‘friends with benefits’ except for Will who was dealing with his feelings for Hanna.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Not as bad as Beautiful Bombshell, but the writers need to add more story besides the sex scenes.
