Romy Grey is the girl who cried rape on the sheriff’s son. Everyone in the small town of Grebe turns on her when her call goes unfounded. Her best friend now makes it her mission to torture her daily and Romy needs a life outside of the small town and her high school. She takes a job at a diner that’s on the border, where no one knows her story and she makes friends there. It’s looking good for her and a guy named Leon, when one night – the night of the biggest party for seniors – her ex best friend Penny walks in and sits at her booth. She heard from another girl about what the sheriff’s son did to her, and she knows now that she was wrong to not believe in Romy. But Romy, in denial still about the events, denies and tells her to leave. But she leaves too, and winds up at the party. However, she wakes up the next morning on the side of the road with a police officer and no memory of what happened the night before and they tell her that she had been missing, and she’s not the only one. Penny is too.
To be honest, this story really got to me in a weird way. It kind of reminded me of Just Listen, only a little bit different. The twist of Penny’s disappearance and ultimate murder was a loop that I didn’t see coming. I just wish that the person who ended up killing Penny hadn’t been that person. I think there could have been another motive there, but the author decided in another direction. Leon was a force in this book, and I really wished that Romy had opened up to him more. Hell, I wished Romy would have opened up more period. I get why she didn’t though, it can’t be easy to go through this traumatic event and not be believed.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. The book cover doesn’t lie when it calls this shocking writing that will absolutely knock you out. I just don’t agree that the ending was all that shocking. Besides it ended weird! Like what happens with Romy and Tina? Do they find that other girl Penny was talking about? And what about Kellan Turner? Does he really get off for what he did?
