It’s safe to say that Sookie Stackhouse has had to deal with a lot since she served Bill Compton that red glass of wine back in the first book. But this time around, Sookie’s life is in peril from more than just the vampires. Here’s a breakdown:
- The person trying to kill Sookie (who also get Marie Star the were) is connected to the group of weres. Thinking it’s Patrick trying to get rid of Alcide, she is shocked to learn that something is happening with Patrick too. They arrange a sit down and it’s revealed that there was a rogue were pack trying to take over the territory. Lots of people die. Alcide becomes the new pack master.
- Sookie finds out about her relatives. Thanks to a meeting arranged by Eric, Sookie meets her fairy great grandfather and she learns about how the fay blood got into her bloodline. Turns out Niall is a prince and his son (Sookie’s true grandfather) has just died and he can now see her. He wants to do something for her and the task she gives him is relatively easy. Hadley – Sookie’s cousin who was the girlfriend to the Queen of Louisiana – was married before she became a vampire and had a kid. Sookie’s task for her grandfather is to find them. He does and what is revealed scares Sookie a little bit. Turns out her nephew Hunter also has the same gift she does.
- And what would a Sookie Stackhouse book be without drama from the vamps? And this time it’s good. Several things happen. Quinn hasn’t been in contact with Sookie since the incident in Rhodes. She finds out why. Because of the incident in Rhodes, Sophie-Ann was severely injured leaving her open to attacks. Such an attack occurs from the King of Nevada. Eric and Bill take refuge in Sookie’s house when the coup happens and Frannie (Quinn’s sister) comes to warn them. It turns out due to some trouble with his mom, Quinn had to work for the King. Sookie feels betrayed but that’s nothing compared to what’s going on with the two vamps. Bill still has feelings for Sookie and feels awful about the things he had to do under the Queen’s orders and tries to make it up to her. And Eric, taking refuge in Sookie’s house, has a revelation of his own. He remembers EVERYTHING from the time he spent with her when he didn’t have his memories. Oh boy…
Compared to the last book, From Dead to Worse is a hell of a lot better. I love the fact that Sookie has a friend in Amelia these days and I also liked that she found out more about her family. It was good timing considering what happened with Jason and Crystal, Sookie’s going to need someone to lean on. The twist with Eric remembering everything was one that I hadn’t seen coming (even though I knew it had to happen eventually) and I’m curious to know what’s going to happen now that he remembers. My biggest complaint throughout the book was how often Sookie seemed to digress from her point. She did a lot of trivial things that I don’t think I really needed the play by play on. Also the fact that she felt bad about her bad moods was really kind of pathetic to me. You’re entitled to be in a bad mood Sookie, especially with all the shitty things going on!
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Better than it’s predecessor with a little bit more intrigue about who was responsible for the attempts on Sookie and some others lives. Sookie is still very moral and sometimes that gets in the way of her narrative. Curious to see what happens in the next book.
