Here’s all you need to know about Why We Broke Up: Min writes a letter to go with the box of stuff that she collected while she was in a relationship with Ed. They had a nasty break up and Min is heartbroken about it. So she decides to show Ed how heartbroken she is by telling him the story of their relationship and what she was really thinking the whole time they were dating. And with each item she wants to tell him the reason that they broke up. There are a lot of reasons that are really far out there and deep, but c’mon Min. The reasons you broke up aren’t all that deep and profound, they are actually really simple:

  1. You guys were too different. As I was reading this book and your relationship started all I could think was you guys are too different. He’s the co-captain of the basketball team and a math nerd, while you’re the girl who thinks everyone sees you as ‘artsy’ but you’re not. You’re different, or at least that’s what Ed calls you about fifteen times throughout the book. You like artsy films, he likes stupid films like Goofballs III. That is why you guys broke up.
  2. Your best friend Al. When you first started dating Ed, he told you that he thought Al was gay. You insisted that he wasn’t, which led Ed to believe that Al was the guy friend who had a crush on you but was too scared to tell you. Your best friend Al didn’t like Ed and that put a strain on both of your relationships. And then Al confessed that he liked you, which anyone could really see especially if they paid attention to your sex talk with him where he needed to a beer to even have that conversation with you. That is why you guys broke up.
  3. Ed was an asshole. No, really, he was. He expected you to show up to his basketball practices and games even though you hated the sport. He didn’t like your friends and offended them at every turn. Don’t even get me started on him going into your friend Lauren’s purse that day they all met up for change for the jukebox. How much of a dick can you be to do something like that? And I know what you’re going to say Min, how much of an asshole could he be if he didn’t pressure you to have sex? It’s easy really, the reason why he wasn’t pressuring you was because he was getting it from his ex Annette who you found out he was cheating on you with. And that is the reason why you guys broke up.

Final Rating: 3 out of 5 stars. Daniel Handler needs a better editor. There’s no way that I would have let him get away with these long ass paragraphs that actually had no point. I get that Min wanted to be a director so her movie references had some sort of point, but most of the time it was a rambling five pages that I just skimmed through.
